The Role
We’re hiring a Data & Analytics Product Intern to help build Aslan’s core decision-intelligence platform. This is the system we rely on to identify, assess, and prioritize future deployment sites.
Aslan has already developed the first version of a geospatial site database. This role will take that foundation further by improving the quality and completeness of the underlying data, automating how information is collected and maintained, and developing better ways to compare and rank opportunities.
You’ll work across data engineering, geospatial analysis, software development, and applied data science. You’ll investigate public and private data sources, build automated data pipelines, improve the product interface, and explore how AI and statistical methods can help fill gaps where reliable site information is difficult to obtain.
This is a high-ownership internship. You’ll work closely with Aslan’s senior leadership, engineering team, and external partners to turn technical and commercial judgment into a more rigorous and scalable site-selection product.
What You’ll Do
You will help evolve Aslan’s existing site database into a more automated, complete, and useful decision-making tool.
In this role, you will:
- Own the continued development of Aslan’s geospatial site-intelligence application, with support from other engineers on the team.
- Identify, evaluate, and integrate public and private datasets relevant to hydropower site selection.
- Build automated pipelines for collecting, cleaning, normalizing, and refreshing data from APIs, databases, geospatial files, and other sources.
- Improve the completeness and reliability of the database, including developing methods to identify and resolve missing or inconsistent information.
- Apply data science, statistical, and AI-based methods to estimate missing site attributes, with clear assumptions and confidence levels.
- Work with senior leadership to turn existing site-selection knowledge into more consistent screening and ranking methods.
- Develop models and tools that help assess factors such as hydrology, energy potential, access, grid proximity, ownership, constructability, and development risk.
- Improve the GIS interface so technical and commercial teams can explore, compare, and prioritize sites more effectively.
- Evaluate the current technology stack and recommend or implement a different architecture where it would materially improve the product.
- Document data sources, analytical methods, assumptions, and system architecture so the product can be maintained and expanded over time.
- Support ongoing database maintenance and help research new markets and potential development areas.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a technically strong, highly independent student who is excited to build and improve a core data product used in real development decisions.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working through open-ended problems, finding and evaluating unfamiliar data sources, and translating incomplete information into thoughtful analytical approaches. You should also care about usability. The goal is not only to build strong models, but to create a product that helps people make better decisions.
You should bring:
- Current enrolment in Computer Science, Data Science, Geomatics, Engineering, Geography, Spatial Analytics, or a related program.
- At least one previous internship, co-op term, research position, or substantial project involving software, data, GIS, or analytics.
- Strong programming skills in Python or a similar language.
- Experience working with SQL, relational databases, APIs, and structured and unstructured datasets.
- Experience with GIS tools and spatial data, such as QGIS, ArcGIS, PostGIS, Google Earth Engine, GeoPandas, or equivalent platforms.
- Familiarity with data engineering workflows, including ingestion, cleaning, transformation, validation, and automation.
- Experience building web applications, dashboards, or data interfaces.
- An understanding of statistical analysis, machine learning, or AI-assisted data methods.
- The ability to communicate analytical methods, assumptions, and limitations clearly.
- Strong research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- The ability to work independently while collaborating closely with technical and non-technical leaders.
- Comfort working in an early-stage environment where the problem and the product will continue to evolve.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure is an asset. Familiarity with hydrology, energy systems, infrastructure, remote sensing, or environmental data would also be valuable, but is not required.

The role also offers exposure to the full site-development process, from early market research and technical screening through engineering, construction, and deployment.
Strong performance during the co-op may lead to an opportunity to join Aslan full-time following graduation.
Compensation and Benefits
- Compensation of $22–$25 per hour, depending on experience.
- Full-time, 12 to 16 month co-op beginning in September 2026.
